Carson City Health and Human Services, in coordination with the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians, proudly presents Tar Wars to the students in the Carson City School District.  A tobacco prevention program designed by the American Academy of Family Physicians and aimed at 4th and 5th graders, Tar Wars informs students of the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure through a creative curriculum and fun activities.  Carson City Health and Human Services is currently serving over 1,000 students per year and many of these students are participating as peer mentors to their fellow students by co-facilitating activities in their schools.  At the end of the program, students can enter the annual poster contest and express their ideas of a smoke-free society.

What's Inside a Cigarette?

There are over 4,000 known chemicals in both a cigarette and secondhand smoke.  Of them, 200 are poisonous and 50 can cause cancer.

If you look at the chart above, you will see many of the chemicals inside a cigarette.  These chemicals include: Methanol (Rocket Fuel), Ammonia (Toilet Cleaner), Nicotine (Insecticide), Toluene (Industrial Solvent), Butane (Lighter Fluid), Methane (Sewer Gas), and Arsenic (Poison).  Would you want to put any of these things into your body?
